|This is the wor1d-famous 120-year old farce
which has moved millions to tears of laughter. It is 1892. College
students Jack Chesney, violently in love with Kitty Verdun, and Charley,
equally enamored of Miss Amy Spettigue, invite the young ladies to their
rooms for luncheon—in order to meet Charley’s wealthy aunt from Brazil
("where the nuts come from"). But alas, the millionaire aunt sends word
that she will have to defer her visit for a few days. What is to be done?
The ladies must be properly chaperoned—but they are soon to leave for
Scotland. The problem is solved by coaxing young Lord Babberley, another
Oxford mate, to don the old lady's costume he is to wear in a college
play. Pretending to be Charley’s aunt, he is introduced to the
sweethearts, to Jack’s father, and to Stephen Spettigue (Amy's uncle and
Kitty's guardian). The sweethearts hug and kiss Charley’s dear old aunt
and the two older men pursue her affections. Then the real aunt turns up,
is surprised to find someone impersonating her, and assumes another name.
Comic confusion results.|
